More than 60 years of tree removal in Geelong

The Irwins Tree Removal story began in 1964, when Geelong-born Graeme Irwin and his brother Ken established the business under their family name.

One of their first major jobs took them to Barwon Heads, where they were tasked with lopping the large old Cypress trees along the main street. Tree work was very different at the time. Without the machinery and equipment available to tree removal crews today, the work was physically demanding and required considerable practical skill.

When Ken later left the business to pursue trucking, Graeme continued Irwins Tree Removal with his wife Lynette.

Their sons Wayne and Mark grew up around the business, joining Graeme on jobs after school and on weekends before eventually working in the family business full time. For many years, Graeme, Wayne and Mark worked together as a team, passing practical knowledge and experience from one generation to the next.

In 1997, Wayne and Mark purchased the company from Graeme. Retirement did not come quickly for Graeme, however. He continued driving trucks for the family business until he was 78.

Experience across Geelong and the Bellarine

Over the decades, Irwins Tree Removal has worked on projects of many different sizes throughout Geelong and the Bellarine.

Following their takeover of the business, Wayne and Mark secured work with large civil contracting firms throughout the Geelong region. Irwins Tree Removal helped clear sites and make way for housing developments, shopping centres and childcare centres, adding significant commercial and civil project experience to the family’s decades of tree work.

At the same time, residential work has remained an important part of the business.

The team has built long-term relationships with customers across Geelong and the Bellarine, with clients returning for everything from tree removal and tree pruning to hedge trimming, managing large gum trees and removing unwanted stumps.

That breadth of work means the Irwins team brings experience gained from decades of working with different trees, properties, sites and project requirements.

Three generations of the Irwin family

Today, Irwins Tree Removal has entered its third generation.

Graeme’s grandchildren Rhys and Sarah have joined the family business, continuing a connection to the tree removal industry that began more than 60 years ago.

While equipment and tree removal methods have changed enormously since Graeme and Ken tackled those Cypress trees in Barwon Heads, the family behind the business has remained closely involved in the work.

That history gives Irwins Tree Removal something that cannot be established overnight: generations of practical knowledge built on jobs completed throughout Geelong and the surrounding region.

The business also continues to take a considered approach to tree management. Where possible, trees are maintained and preserved rather than unnecessarily removed. When removal is required, the team works to leave the surrounding area clean and tidy while minimising unnecessary damage.
